Durian Growing Guide for Southern Thailand
Learn how to grow Thailand's most valuable fruit crop, from planting to export-quality harvesting.
Thailand's King of Fruits
Durian is Thailand's most valuable fruit crop, with export value exceeding 100 billion baht annually. Chinese demand continues to surge, and premium Thai varieties like Monthong and Chanee command extraordinary prices. A mature durian orchard can generate 100,000-300,000 baht per rai annually β far exceeding most other crops.
Climate and Site Selection
Durian thrives in Southern Thailand's tropical climate with 2,000-3,000 mm annual rainfall and year-round temperatures above 22Β°C. Well-drained soil is essential β durian roots are extremely sensitive to waterlogging. Avoid low-lying areas and heavy clay soils. The ideal site has deep, well-drained loam with pH 6.0-6.5.
Planting and Early Care
Space trees 8-10 meters apart (40-60 trees per rai). The first 5 years require patience β durian trees do not bear fruit until year 5-7. During this establishment period, many farmers intercrop with shorter-cycle crops like banana, papaya, or coffee to generate income from the same land.
Nutrition and Water Management
Durian is a heavy feeder requiring balanced nutrition throughout the year:
- Vegetative phase β High nitrogen (21-0-0 or 46-0-0) to promote canopy growth.
- Pre-flowering β Reduce nitrogen, increase phosphorus (0-46-0) and potassium (0-0-60) to induce flowering.
- Fruit development β Potassium-heavy fertilization improves fruit size, sweetness, and flesh quality.
Water stress for 10-14 days during the dry season helps trigger flowering, but careful irrigation during fruit fill is critical for quality.
Pest and Disease Management
Phytophthora root rot is the most serious durian disease β prevent it with good drainage and phosphonic acid trunk injections. Durian borers require monitoring with pheromone traps. Fruit flies become problematic close to harvest β use protein bait traps and proper orchard sanitation.
Harvesting for Export Quality
For the premium Chinese export market, harvest at 80-85% maturity for Monthong variety. Use the tapping method β a ripe durian produces a hollow sound when tapped. Track heat units from flowering to predict optimal harvest date. Premium packing and cold chain logistics are essential for export. FarmHand's harvest tracking tools help you time your harvest perfectly and connect with certified export aggregators.
