A Guide to Organic Farming Certification in Thailand

How to transition to organic farming and get certified to access premium markets.

The Organic Opportunity

Organic produce commands 30-100% premium prices in Thai domestic markets and even higher in export markets. Demand is growing rapidly as health-conscious consumers in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and export destinations seek certified organic products. The investment in certification pays back within 2-3 seasons for most farms.

Certification Standards in Thailand

Thailand recognizes several organic standards:

  • Organic Thailand β€” The national standard administered by the Department of Agriculture's Organic Certification Body (ACT). Most accessible for domestic sales.
  • IFOAM β€” International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements standard, accepted in many export markets.
  • USDA Organic / EU Organic β€” Required for export to the US or European Union. More rigorous and expensive but opens premium markets.

The Transition Period

Expect a 2-3 year transition period during which you follow organic practices but cannot yet sell products as certified organic. During this time, yields typically drop 20-30% before recovering. Plan your finances accordingly β€” many farmers transition one field at a time rather than converting the entire farm at once.

Key Organic Practices

Organic certification requires eliminating synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, using organic seeds when available, maintaining buffer zones from conventional fields, and implementing a documented pest management plan using biological controls, crop rotation, and cultural practices.

Documentation and Record Keeping

Certification auditors require detailed records of every input applied, every field operation performed, and every sale made. FarmHand's organic tracking module helps you maintain these records digitally, generate audit-ready reports, and receive reminders for required documentation throughout the season.

Finding Markets

Start with local organic markets and farmer cooperatives. The FarmHand Marketplace has a dedicated organic section where certified producers can reach buyers willing to pay premium prices. As your production scales, consider contracts with organic retailers, restaurants, and export aggregators.
